Hi J. A.,
I always try to put the user first. I'm not a corporation and don't consider end users just another variable in a profit-maximizing equation. In fact, peer appreciation is what really keeps me going on those days when nothing seems to want to work right. I want FeedBeast to be number one, and I won't rest until it is.
That said, being a privately-held startup, I do need to make money to support my ambitions and so I must experiment with various methods of generating revenue. However, I feel that since FeedBeast is really your (the users') program, you should have a say in how I ultimately end up going about that. I'm really excited about the next version of FeedBeast, which I will be releasing with no feed limit, and no trial-period (I personally hate those), thanks to embedded Google ads. You will still be able to purchase the program for a dramatically-reduced pricepoint of 5 dollars, and gain the ability to turn off ads if they annoy you. Thus I aim to deliver the best of both worlds: to the average user who just wants a professional RSS reader with no fuss, they can download and use FeedBeast for free for as long as they like, so long as they don't mind looking at a few ads (not unlike your typical web site these days), while for the more dedicated users, a fully licensed copy is available at an unbeatable price.
Please let me know your (or anyone else who wishes to join in) thoughts on this matter. And remember, with The Little Software Company you do have a say!
Take care,
Logan
